Hysteresis Loop

Site
Index

A lag between cause and effect.

With magnetism it is the amount that the magnetization of a material lags the magnetizing force due to molecular friction.

Drawing 1 illustrates what is known as a Hysteresis Loop, which is formed when you plot magnetizing force H against flux density B through a complete cycle of alternating current, as seen in Drawing 2.

Initially, when the switch is open, the iron core is unmagnetized; both H and B are zero at point a.
